Tribute to Dr VVJayakar

 Past few days,Social media is flooded with news of assault on a Surgery 1st yr Resident in Govt medical college,Yavatmal in Maharashtra.The young Doctor was stabbed unscrupulously by a patient from behind during morning rounds.

This news took me Deja Vu back to 2003.

One afternoon I get a call from my Mumbai Doctor friend" Tripti,Dr VVJayakar is no more".

Dr VVJayakar was a renowned Physician in Mumbai He got extremely critical patients all over Maharaj for consultation. 

Likewise,a young boy was brought from interiors of Maharashtra by his brother for consultation. This boy was brought in such a critical condition that Dr Jayakar and his team explained everything to the relatives prior to admission  Despite if rigorous treatment the boy unfortunately succumbed to his illness.The team put all efforts to reason with the enraged Brother of the patient .But nothing calmed him.

In a fit if anger,he ordered Amateur Supari or Conteact killers who shot Dr VV Jayaker into his chest point blank range in broad daylight in front of his clinic.

Shocking and great loss to entire Medical Fraternity entire Maharashtra.Protests all over by All Medical Fraternity, Rallies,Protest March condemning the brutal killing of an Innocent Doctor ....and demanding strict action against culprit. 

The Brother of the patient himself surrendered to the Police and felt ashamed of his actions. 

But such a noble life got sacrificed by rage of ignorant relative.

A huge loss to not only Medical Fraternity but to the Society too.

I worked for a very brief period under Dr VVJayakar.

Our interactions restricted nothing beyond patient and carrying out his orders for their treatment. I had just finished my MBBS and joined Housemanship in Medicine ward in Sir HNHospital, Girgaum,Mumbai.

Though hardly for 2 to 3 months.....I worked under Dr Jayakar......learnt a lot about practical approach to Medicine.

Sir received extremely critical cases,majority who had undergonebattery of tests and months of medical treatment elsewhere.

I was surprised to see a Different line of Drug started by Sir ......Yes would have ordered battery of advanced tests.......but before we get the reports......the treatment to the patient was already started.......and Sir would predict the results of the tests prior.

His theory remained with me forever.....

" Diagnosis of a disease is first made by detailed history taking and indepth, meticulous clinical examination of the patient.Diagnostics are only for documentation and supporting your Diagnosis........never the reverse."......

I have seen so many critically ill patients given up by many Doctors cured by this Demi GOD......

Patience, Perseverance, Sincerity to your Clinical Skills is what I've learnt from this Great Clinician.

He had a thorough knowledge about all Diagnostics old as well the newly arrived ones in that period.

Which patient required what.....he was Bang on .......

Such a great Physician succumbed to the fit of rage of a grieving,Ignorant relative is indeed a huge loss to Everyone...mostly his family members.

Government of India and National Medical Council of India does implement measures for protection of Doctors. 

But my dear friends,does this alone solve the problem?????

No.

The mentality and behaviour of the Society needs to change.

By assaulting a Doctor...will never bring back their deceased family member.

If you have grievance, there are other ways and methods to tackle issues.

Consumer courts, Legal systems and laws are made for advocating grievances. 

Hurting some innocent person never is solution to your emotions.

Doctors are called Dhanvantari.

But never forget that this Doctor is a human being first.

Protect your Doctors .....dear Society....
